The Anthem of the Adventurer

25 Clarify Your Filter With Tools and Tactics from the Navy SEALs w/ Larry Yatch

Episode Summary

We have my friend, Larry Yatch. Now Larry is a special breed of guy: he was bound and determined to be a Navy fighter pilot since he saw the movie Top Gun in 3rd grade, but that changed when a friend gave him a Navy SEAL sweatshirt which would redirect the course of his life. After graduating from the Naval Academy, he would pass the hardest military training in the world to become a Navy SEAL and serve our country with distinction for 10 years as an officer. His military service ended when he was medically retired, but his service to our country continued in the form of building businesses to help others build and execute in high performing teams at work and at home.

Episode Notes

Today on the show…

I met Larry 2 years ago through the Good Dad Project podcast, and have taken a couple of his training courses since then. During the course of that training, I’ve gotten to know Larry on a more personal level and I’m honored to call him one of my closest friends. He and his wife Anne have created a powerful team in their family and they are creating an amazing impact on the world while leaving a legacy of adventure and service for their boys.

In our time today we’ll talk about:

Lessons from Navy SEAL career:
-being able to persevere and self regulate
-if it hurts, if I encounter some resistance, that’s the direction I get to head into for growth and self awareness
-focus on the good things that are coming, instead of the bad things that are around you

Striving, struggling, and suffering today for a little treat of happiness tomorrow is the trap of being “normal.” We can’t be normal if we want to get exceptional results! Imagine striving your whole life just to be normal, just to get to “average.”

Our subconscious choices are controlled by our environment. For Larry and Anne, they needed to change their environment every 6 months until those less effective habits are broken!

Two gifts from the SEALs:
-Team: huge level of love, care, and support from teammates
-An endless supply of the opportunity to be in a flow state

Larry’s challenge this week:

Having a difficult, challenging, or even a conversation out of the norm with our wives can be super scary! A physical challenge for many of us is easy, so we’re going about this challenge a bit differently today.
Write down what it would FEEL like to have our ideal life today, not tomorrow. What would it FEEL like? What would it LOOK like? What’s there? What’s not there?
Then, share how this ideal life feels and looks with your wife! Ask her what her ideal life today would FEEL and LOOK like to be aware of what the GAP between both might be.
For many of us in relationships, there is often a GAP between the life we as fathers want to live and the dreams we want to achieve for our families and what our spouse might see as possible or be comfortable with. How many of us would want to bring our wives’ vision for the ideal life closer to ours to positively impact our family and others? how many of us would want to close the gap so that making decisions together would be easier and more fun?
If you find that there is a GAP, reach back out to Larry or to me to put you in touch with Larry. He has created an incredible set of tools to help anyone who doesn’t want to be normal create the life you want for yourself, your connection with your spouse, your family and your impact in the world.
For Larry, he would have confidence that they were on adventures as a family that enable them to learn as individuals and as a family while impacting the world in a measurable way.
